Gary and Laura Maurer Concert Hall :: 4544 N. Lincoln Ave. $25 General Public/$23 Old Town School Members/$21 Seniors & Children BOX OFFICE: 773.728.6000 A singer, songwriter and clawhammer banjo player who pairs venerable folk elements with global and far-flung sounds, Abigail Washburn lives in a musical world both strangely familiar and exceedingly unique. Mixing lush old-time tunes with original songs written in Chinese, Washburn thrives in creating music that makes people feel powerful, music that gives the sense that anything is possible. A student of her father, Ms. Yang Ying began the study of the erhu at the age of five. By 13, she was performing solo concerts, and by 19 she had graduated from the Opera University of Henan, China and had begun performing for the Central Song and Dance Ensemble in Beijing. At the age of 25, Yang Ying won first place in a national erhu competition, clearly distinguishing herself as one of the foremost erhu players in China. Improvisation is an important aspect of traditional Chinese music, and Ying is gifted improvisor who enjoys joining in improvisational sessions of any style of music. She is also interested in a fusion of Western and Eastern music. Ms. Yang Ying was the founder, bass player, and singer for Cobra, the first all female rock band in China. Ms. Yang Ying's appearance is sponsored in part by China America Living Arts.
