Szold Music & Dance Hall Box Office: 773.728.6000 Tickets: $15 General Public, $13 Members Jonas Friddle & The Majority Jonas Friddle and the Majority, led by Old Town School teacher extraordinaire Mr. Friddle, has a huge sound that combines string quartet, horns and rock and roll drums for a melody filled, dance inspiring result. Jonas recently won the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting contest for his modern classic "Belle de Louisville.” Orpheum Bell Come hear why Michigan music is at the vanguard of the new Americana. Making old styles new, Ann Arbor's Orpheum Bell's “Country & Eastern” sound moves from chiseled, plaintive song stories to articulate, richly-played instrumentals. "Country and Eastern" rhythms, instrumental waltzes, and Gypsy melodies are given new life with an impressive host of instruments, including accordion, guitar, double bass, banjo, trumpet, xylophone, saw, violin, and shepherd harp. "It's a carny sound they create, the sound of a traveling medicine show rolling into town, but a long way from the sometimes sinister undercurrents of that music, for theirs is warm, welcoming and consistently engaging. The playing is inventive and sublime, particularly on the instrumentals scattered thought the album, and the lyrics, notably on the sad tale of “Poor Laetitia” and the wrenching “Daddy's Crying,” powerful and poignant. A great album, one that's both enjoyable and interesting.” Americana UK
