Kaumakaiwa Kanaka’ole with Shawn Pimental on Guitar Part of Festival of Aloha Saturday, May 25, 2013 ♦ 8:00 PM Gary and Laura Maurer Concert Hall 4544 North Lincoln Avenue Box Office: 773.728.6000 Tickets: $22 General Public, $20 Members Kaumakaiwa brings to the stage an immense talent as a singer, chanter, and dancer as well as a deep understanding of his Hawaiian culture and his place as a modern Hawaiian in this contemporary world. His performances and music seamlessly meld Hawaiian culture and modern sensibilities, and he explains the songs and their contexts as he goes along, often with funny commentary and stories. His songs draw from ancient ‘oli (chant) traditions, modern melodies, and original mele (songs), in a powerful mix of music that speaks to the soul. “Mr. Kanaka'ole…was backed only by a guitarist in songs drawing on island traditions, particularly chameleonic vocals. He vaulted through various registers and timbres, from bass to witchy contralto rasp to sweet soprano (his “skinny girl” voice, he said), a traditionalist tour de force.” - New York Times This tour is supported in part by the globalFEST Touring Fund: globalFEST.org
