Sunday, March 17, 2013 ♦ 8:00 PM Gary and Laura Maurer Concert Hall 4544 N Lincoln Avenue Box Office: 773.728.6000 $20 General Public, $18 Members La Chiva Gantiva formed in Brussels when a group of Columbian percussionists began playing together in order to feel closer to their homeland and its rich musical heritage. Pushed by a desire to assert their roots and reproduce Colombian rhythms of yesteryear, like less well known rhythms such as champeta, chirimia, and mapalé, La Chiva Gantiva uses traditional Caribbean instruments such as la tambora, el alegre, el llamador, and maracones. The group also incorporates bass guitar, clarinet, and saxophone, which reflect the diverse influences of the group: Colombian (with the likes of Toto la Moposina, Lucho Bermudez, and Petrona Martinez), Latin (Fania All Stars, Irakere), African (Fela Kuti and Tony Allen), Jazz (Lionel Hampton), Funk (the legendary James Brown) and Rock (Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine). The result of this cultural soundclash is a unique musical style and explosive on-stage energy. They produced a frenetic carnival-punk racket that detonated like a Molotov cocktail of rock, rap, soul and ferociously funky Latin rhythms. - The London Times http://www.lachivagantiva.com/ http://www.oldtownschool.org/concerts/2013/03-17-2013-la-chiva-gantiva-8pm/
