Growing up in a multi-cultural family in the suburbs of Chicago, El Saffar was on a classical music trajectory, winning a spot in Civic Symphony while she was still in high school. A trip to Baghdad at age 17 left a permanent mark on her musical identity and she began a life-long exploration of Middle Eastern music. Her new album, entitledTrain to Basra, is recorded by her band Salaam. Salaam is a Middle Eastern music ensemble led by El Saffar and her husband, percussionist Tim Moore. They are joined in concert and on the recording by Dena's brother, Amir El Saffar and sister-in-law Lety ElNaggar, as well as many other talented artists. Featuring songs such as “Iraqi-American Blues” and “Queen of Sheba,” El Saffar hope that listeners will be compelled by the new album as well as the stories behind the music.
